Apple plans a rally

FRUIT THEMED PURVEYOR of fragile Iphones and shiny Ipads for the idle rich, Apple has suddenly remembered that once upon a time it used to make some computers and operating systems.

Jobs' Mob is apparently inviting its tame press to its Cupertino headquarters on 20 October.

Of course it is not saying why, so that means for the next few days we will see loads of free press releases for Apple based on bootless speculation.

However it is not too difficult to work out. The invitation shows an image of Apple's logo opening like a door to reveal a glimpse of a lion.

It is logical to assume that given Apple's feline fixation that it will be about a version of Mac OS X, which will be something called Lion.

The most up-to-date version of Mac OS X is called Snow Leopard. Previous versions have included Leopard, Tiger and Panther, so the King of the Beasts is a good bet. Certainly better than its two Leopards, which tended to deliver spotty performance.

Mac OS X 10.7 is unlikely to hit the shops until next summer. Apple will probably release more details at its Worldwide Developers Conference in San Francisco next June and hint at a shipping date.

What the next Mac OS X will have is anyone's guess. It will probably include more integration between mobile applications and the Apple Mac PC. Things like making Facetime work with Ichat.

Apple press conferences are a bit like Nuremberg rallies, with the press embarrassing themselves and showing how biased they are by giving Steve Jobs standing ovations for saying "super, cool, and wonderful" a lot, going 'ooh' and 'ah' when he says "magical", and not asking any hard questions.
