GOTV vs SMART TV NEW PAY TV PLAYERS ON THE DTTV PLATFORM IN KENYA

September 14th saw the launch of GOTV a product of MultiChoice which is the main players on the continent when it comes to pay TV service provision. Well as it is, GOTV shall be a digital terrestrial pay service provider that has come in to compete with the rest of the market players such as Smart TV, Zuku, and the expected entry into market by the mobile phone companies. Satellite platform (DTH) is becoming more and the list preferred as DTT nears a worldwide adoption come 2015 and no one wants to be left behind considering the fact that it’s cheaper and has room for localization.
Well, am not such a big fun of pay TV but I do appreciate the competition that is being brought into the market for the consumer stands to benefit a great deal. The only problem is DSTV’s firm grip on the premium does no justice to my excitement. Pay TV should not be a privilege but a basic need but judging from these new developments, the future could as well be bright…
Looking at the broadcast developments in the past few months, you will realize that there has been a lot of controversy with regard to the migration from analogue to digital platform. GOTV is has just launched on a T2 technology but as far as am concerned the country is yet to get the T2 infrastructure in place. The only available technology that is in use is T1 which is to be done away with (even though it will run in parallel with T2 for a while) come 2012. The required standards for any decoders are not privy to me as such but I am meant to understand that any decoder has to be open to other service providers but am not sure on how this will be enforced by CCK since there might be a slight difference software as well as hardware variation depending on the manufactures.

I am yet to lay my hands on a GOTV decoder but am sure it is a T2, backward compatible in that it can be able to pick the current T1 signal. I used to be an early adopter but I now seat on the wall and watch for the development. The T1 platform ushered in the likes of Oxygen TV and SMART TV in the market that has not a bed of roses.
In this time and age early adoption a times means biting the bullet… I will let you readers be the judges at this.
